There was nothing immaculate about a Catholic school teacher’s conception.
Christa Dias, a former teacher at Holy Family and St. Lawrence Catholic schools in Cincinnati, Ohio, claims she was fired for becoming pregnant using artificial insemination.
Ms Dias was fired in October 2010 when, at five and a half months pregnant, she approached her employer about maternity leave options.
The schools initially fired Ms Dias, 32, for being single and pregnant, Cincinnati.com reports.
When the schools discovered that violated several federal and state anti-discrimination laws, they said she was fired because she became pregnant using artificial insemination.
That, the school said, was in direct violation of her contract.
‘She has a right to her opinion, but she doesn’t have a right to violate her contract,’ Archdiocese of Cincinnati spokesman Dan Andriacco told the website.

28 story escalator Colombia

28 story escalator Colombia

28 story escalator Colombia, 28-story escalator opens, A 28-story outdoor escalator has opened in this large South American city. The $6.7 million project is expected to cut the time it takes local residents to hoof it up a huge hill from 35 minutes to six minutes.
Taking the stairs was never this easy. Residents of Medellin, Colombia took their inaugural climb this week on what may be the world’s tallest outdoor escalator, a 28-story electric stairway up a steep hillside serving 12,000 residents.

Previously, residents of the Comuna 13 neighborhood had to climb hundreds of steps, but now one of the poorest areas in Colombia’s second-largest city will serve as an example to neighboring countries on how to perch the escalator machinery on the sides of rocky walls.

However, this mega electric stairway hasn’t been built in a futuristic casino or a glitzy mall. Instead, this $6.7 million behemoth was constructed in the Comuna 13 neighborhood of Medellin, Colombia – one of the poorest and most violent areas of the city.

The escalator is divided into six sections and has been built against a steep hillside, leaving residents of Comuna 13 overjoyed. Whereas previously people would spend 35 minutes climbing hundreds of steps to scale the hill, the new escalator takes only six minutes to scale 1,260 feet – and all for free. Best of all, there’s a second escalator for the downhill journey as well. Nice!

This week saw residents take their inaugural journey on the new stairway, and for once they could relax and enjoy the scenic view overlooking Medellin. Officials in the city are hoping the escalator will help quash the violent reputation of the area, and turn the neighborhood into a source of national pride.

Ex-stripper sues police chief

Ex-stripper sues police chief

Ex-stripper sues police chief, A former stripper has filed a civil suit against a police chief accused of stealing money from her purse  after a car chase. Col. John Whiting has pleaded not guilty to charges he stole the money from Justina Cardosa, 21. Whiting has been suspended without pay.

Plainfield Police Detective Edwin “Eddie” Maldonado with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill.
The nearly 11-year veteran of the force earlier in 2010 was elected president of the National Latino Peace Officers Association (NLPOA), the largest national group of its kind. The association, founded in California in 1974, was created to promote the hiring, welfare and unity of Hispanic law-enforcement agents in a broad spectrum of local, county, state and federal capacities nationwide.

It was in that capacity that Maldonado recently met with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill at a function in Washington, D.C.

Maldonado founded the NLPOA’s New Jersey chapter in 2003, citing a lack of organization and unity among the state’s many Hispanic police officers. That chapter today includes a healthy roster of eight subdivisions, including groups representing the State Police and Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Mercer, Monmouth, Morris and Union counties. The detective, whose parents immigrated here from Puerto Rico, grew up on Watchung Avenue just steps from police headquarters.

Maldonado was a police cadet here at age 14, and the 1986 Plainfield High School graduate joined the local force in 2000 after graduating from the Union County Police Academy. Today he is attending Fairleigh Dickinson University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public administration, and is the recipient of three meritorious duty awards, five excellent duty awards, five commendation awards, one life saving award, nine perfect attendance awards and multiple letters of commendation in his law-enforcement career.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A police chief accused of stealing $714 from a former stripper's purse after a car chase is now facing a federal lawsuit that alleges he violated her constitutional rights.

The former stripper, Justina Cardoso, filed suit on Dec. 22 claiming Col. John Whiting violated the rights protecting her from illegal searches and granting her due process. The 21-year-old Cardoso, who lives in Pawtucket and performed at the Satin Doll strip club in Providence, is seeking $250,000 in damages from Whiting.

Whiting, of North Attleborough, Mass., has been suspended without pay from his job as North Providence police chief since his September arrest. He pleaded not guilty earlier this month to charges he stole the money from Cardoso's Coach pocketbook and then tried to cover it up. His next court date is Feb. 16.

Whiting was driving to work in an unmarked police vehicle on Aug. 28 when he activated his police lights and began chasing Cardoso's Ford Explorer in Pawtucket, police say. Whiting, 57, told police someone inside the Explorer threw an object at his vehicle as he was trying to pass it. The SUV, in which Cardoso was a passenger, had slowed down to try to get around a fallen tree, police said.

The chase ended when the SUV crashed into a parked car and the people inside fled.

Whiting later admitted to a Pawtucket officer that he stole money from a pocketbook "loaded with cash" that he found inside the SUV, investigators wrote in an affidavit. The Pawtucket officer said Whiting gave him the money and told him to spend it in Las Vegas and not discuss it.

Cardoso's lawsuit claims Whiting illegally went through her SUV and took her money, which police say she earned at the Satin Doll and from a man who paid her for "her company." She also claims Whiting violated her privacy.

Her civil attorney declined to comment on Tuesday. Messages also were left Tuesday for Whiting and his criminal defense attorney.

After the car chase, Cardoso was arrested on a warrant for an unrelated criminal matter. She pleaded no contest last month to three charges in an extortion and blackmail case and to one count of marijuana possession.

Titanic anniversary cruise 2012

Titanic anniversary cruise 2012

Titanic anniversary cruise 2012, Cruise to retrace Titanic's route, A company is offering cruises that will retrace the exact route the Titanic took 100 years ago when it sank . April 15, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the ship's demise

File this in the annals of Thanatourism: a charter tour company is offering a 12-day transatlantic cruise in April 2012, which will not only commemorate the centennial anniversary of the Titanic tragedy, but will seek to mimic the original passage as closely as possible. Even the ship itself, The Balmoral of Fred Olsen Cruise Line, whose parent company Harland and Wolff built the Titanic, comes close to the specifics of the ill-fated ship.

While we're aware that there are plenty of Titanic fanatics out there possibly willing to drop £2,595 ($3,776) and up for a berth on the cruise, we hope they realize this will be no vacation; it is more akin to a funeral procession. Carrying the same number of passengers as the Titanic—1,309—and playing the music of and serving meals from the menus of that tragic voyage, The Balmoral cruise is destined to be a mellow affair...or so we'd hope.

Let us creep you out further: the itinerary will begin in Southampton, England and sail to Cobh, Ireland, where the Titanic made its last port call. Next stop is of course the ice fields of the North Atlantic, where the ship will stop at the approximate coordinates of the Titanic's sinking in order to conduct a service at the approximate time when some 1,500 people lost their lives.

As if dancing on their watery grave wasn't fun enough, The Balmoral , will dock next at Halifax, Nova Scotia with the intent of visiting what else but a graveyard, in which Titanic victims are buried. The cruise will then end in New York City, at which point we like to imagine the whole of the ship's passengers sullenly offloading directly into a matinee of The Little Mermaid on Broadway.

Titanic fan or not, would you go so far as to trust a boat full of sunken ship enthusiasts in the middle of a cold, dark Atlantic ocean? All ashore, we say, all ashore! In any case, April 2012 is sure to be a month full of Titanic documentaries on the History Channel, and that's good enough for us.
In observance of this memorable time in history, The MS Balmoral, a cruise ship owned by Fred Olsen Cruise Lines (whose parent company built the Titanic), is offering a 12 day cruise following the Titanic’s trail from Southampton to the tragic sight of the sinking, then on to Halifax to visit 3 cemeteries where many of the Titanic victims are buried. Final destination is New York, the original destination of the Titanic. While on board, a memorial service will be held exactly 100 years after the Titanic hit the iceberg and sank. Passengers can dine on the identical menu as that of the Titanic and enjoy music and entertainment similar to that enjoyed in 1912. Talks and demos relating to the Titanic’s history and lectures focusing on life on board the Titanic 100 years ago will also be presented.
Books of Interest:

If you’re interested in learning more about the Sinking of the Titanic in April of 1912, read Walter Lord’s A Night To Remember, which includes a list of passengers that survived as well as gripping interviews from over 60 of those surviving passengers describing the events leading up to the disastrous sinking.

April of 2012 will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic.

As reported here in October, there will be a memorial cruise to mark the anniversary. This cruise will follow the same course the Titanic took from the UK to the approximate place she sank. However, this cruise is scheduled to make stops in Nova Scotia to visit Titanic memorial and grave sites. The final leg of this cruise is New York City.

Included on the cruise will be several lectures, not all of which have been announced. Check below for lectures scheduled so far.
A century after the Titanic set sail on its fateful voyage across the Atlantic, a second historic cruise will depart New York City on April 10, 2012. Starting today, guests can book the eight-night charter voyage on the deluxe 694-guest Azamara Journey, which will feature a series of Titanic historian lecturers.

On the April 14 anniversary, guests on Azamara Journey will join the 1,309 aboard another Titanic Memorial Cruise, Balmoral , at the site of the original ship’s sinking for a memorial service. Balmoral , which will sail from Southampton, England, sold out last October, and has an extensive waiting list.

Azamara Journey will call at Halifax, Nova Scotia, which has one of the most moving and intimate connections with the Titanic disaster, becoming the final resting place of many of her unclaimed victims. Here, among a number of excursion options, guests will have the opportunity to visit Fairview Lawn Cemetery where victims of the sinking are buried.

“Our original Titanic anniversary cruise aboard Balmoral sold out last fall to over 1,300 people from 24 countries, including 350 from the U.S.,” said Miles Morgan, managing director of the Titanic Memorial Cruise. “Many passengers either had relatives on the Titanic, or have a lifelong fascination with the story. We are expecting that Azamara Journey, with only half the Balmoral’s capacity, will sell quickly.”

Guests of Azamara Journey also will enjoy the cruise line’s extraordinary signature service and more inclusive onboard amenities, such as included gratuities for housekeeping, dining and bar staff; complimentary bottled water, sodas, specialty coffee, and teas, as well as complimentary boutique red and white wines to accompany lunch and dinner.

The exclusive charter aboard Azamara Journey offers guests a European-boutique hotel ambience with fine cuisine, wines from around the world, and wellness and vitality programs.

Prices start at $4,725 per person, double occupancy, while suites, which start at $6,750 per person, offer additional luxury amenities such as English butler service and a private portrait sitting.

April 2012 will mark the 100th year anniversary of the Titanic's untimely demise. To cash in on commemorate the event, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines is holding the Balmoral Cruise, a voyage that will follow the same course as the historic ship did back in 2012. If the Titanic's tragic history left a mark on you , here's your chance to be a part of its recreation - without the eventual demise.

Recreating a monumental accident can be either fascinating or creepy. Personally, I find it a tad disturbing. Your own mileage may vary.

The Balmoral, a 218-meter ship  will carry 1,309 passengers  and repeat the Titanic's voyage, beginning with its departure from South Hampton. It will make its way to the Irish port of Cobh, where the Titanic made its final call, before going back to sea.

Not creepy enough? There's more. You'll join the other 1,308 passengers in the spot where the vessel met its fate on April 14, with memorial services held right on the ship at 11:40pm (the time it hit the iceberg) and at 2:20am of the next day Ghosts aren't guaranteed, but won't being there just send shivers down your spine? After that, the ship will proceed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a scheduled visit to the cemetery where 121 of the victims are buried, before finally dropping anchor in New York.

More than 100 cabins have been booked so far, with at least 600 more available. The cruise lasts for 12 nights and will cost £2,595, inclusive of the whole trip along with a plane ticket back to London. Reservations only started last Wednesday and it's not likely that empty slots will last long.

Hidden gun goes off at Starbucks

Hidden gun goes off at Starbucks

Hidden gun goes off at Starbucks, A shot fired by a concealed weapon that went off at a Starbucks narrowly missed several customers, and no one was hurt, police say.  A father reportedly gave the gun  to his teenage daughter for protection.

This will make for one hell of a Trauma-Rama teen mag letter, putting all those inopportune menarche tales to shame: a 17-year-old girl nearly killed a man when she dropped her purse and her gun went off in a Cheyenne, Wyoming Starbucks on Monday. The unnamed teen's dad had given her a double-barrel .38 special Derringer pistol "for her protection," and when she dropped her purse, the top barrel went off, missing a nearby patron by about a foot.
A lot of the power of the secret 'short' at Starbucks is that you can pretend you're an insider, that you know something special, you know the maitre de.

Of the good reasons to avoid Starbucks – the over-priced, burned coffee or the crushing of independent competitors – here, in the US, is another: the danger of getting hit by bullets from customers' guns.

The state of Virginia has allowed "open carry" of guns for many years, and reinforced by law since 2004, allowing the carrying or wearing of guns in public other than assault rifles. Individual stores and businesses retain the right to exclude guns from their premises – but Starbucks has decided not to exercise that right. The result is scenes such as this, as reported by the Associated Press:

Dale Welch recently walked into a Starbucks in Virginia, handgun strapped to his waist, and ordered a banana Frappuccino with a cinnamon bun. He says the firearm drew a double-take from at least one customer, but not a peep from the baristas.

Gun rights activists have been targeting Starbucks' branches around the country, holding meetings in which dozens carrying guns turn up and buy lattes. Starbucks itself won't comment, other than making a statement that the company follows state and local laws and has its own "safety measures" in place in its stores.

Dale Welch, the gun-toting, Frappuccino-buyer above, is a 71-year-old who lives in Richmond, Virginia, one of the safer parts of America more generally. "I don't know of anybody who would provide me with defense other than myself, so I routinely as a way of life carry a weapon — and that extends to my coffee shops," Welch said.

Gun control advocates aren't pleased with Starbucks, a company that prides itself on its social responsibility. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence has begun an petition, telling Starbucks corporation chairman, Howard Schultz:

Breastfeeding flash mobs

Breast-feeding flash mobs

Breast-feeding flash mobs , Nursing moms turned out en masse to breast-feed at Target stores in at least 35 states on Wednesday.  The reason for the flash mobs? A mom says she was hassled when she breast-fed her infant son in a Target store. Target reportedly has apologized

Dads who know how valuable their support is to the breastfeeding relationship
A hardy group of mothers staged a breastfeeding flash-mob demonstration in a city centre to declare their right to feed their babies in public.
Up to 40 mothers, some accompanied by their partners, descended on Brighton, East Sussex, and breastfed their children in front of Christmas shoppers.

Claire Jones-Hughes, 38, organised the demonstration after she was criticised by customers in a cafe for breastfeeding one of her daughters last week.

She was confronted by a group of four middle-aged women and a man in her favourite vegetarian restaurant, Wai Kika Moo Kau, after feeding four-month-old Callie.

Mrs Jones-Hughes said: "One woman said, 'It was very unpleasant watching you feed. You should have covered up more'. When I protested, the others joined in, and the man said, 'You should have used a towel'.

"I was really shocked, especially as I'd gone to a lot of effort to be discreet. You usually get nice comments when you're with a baby, and I couldn't believe I was having this conversation. In their world, it was completely unnatural that they should see me doing that."

Despite the support of another customer, Mrs Jones-Hughes was visibly shaken and reduced to tears by the incident.

She said: "After they left, the manager came over to ask what happened and was mortified when I told him. When I calmed down it reminded me of all the stories I've heard from other women who've had similar experiences."

After drumming up support online, Mrs Jones-Hughes encouraged other women to brave the cold to feed their babies as part of the flash mob at the Clock Tower.

The customer services manager, who also has a three-year-old daughter Lexie, said she hoped the event would give confidence to mothers who are nervous about breastfeeding in public.
What was supposed to be a peaceful breastfeeding flash mob at The Somerset Collection Sunday afternoon was shut down after mall management and security confronted the event’s organizer, Mary Napoli.

"They wouldn't let us do it," Napoli, of St. Clair Shores, said. Napoli had organized the event along with In Home Lactation Specialists, LLC.

As one of 11 women who came to the event, Napoli had just sat down to start nursing her 1-year-old son when a security guard confronted her and told her she needed to stop.

When Napoli said she didn't understand why they couldn't do it, the security guard said, "We do not allow flash mobs."

But Napoli, who breastfed both her sons, thought it was about more than just a flash mob.

When she asked, "So, you don't allow nursing in the mall?" a mall manager replied: "Not in public, we don't."

Michigan state law says that public nudity laws do not apply to a woman breastfeeding a child, though Michigan is not one of the 45 states that specifically allow women to breastfeed in any public or private location.

"Clearly, feeding your child a meal is offensive to do in the rest of this part of the mall, even though according to the state of Michigan, it's permissible and encouraged," Napoli said.

Edward Nakfoor, spokesperson for The Somerset Collection, said in a statement issued Sunday evening that the mall does allow breastfeeding, though it does not allow "demonstrating or protesting of any kind, as we are private property."

"I am extremely disappointed in the sheer ignorance of Somerset Collection," said lactation consultant Brandy Walters, who was present when the flash mob was dispelled. "I know the breastfeeding community will be supporting Mary."

Blogger Anna Collette Higgs of Part Mummy Part Me held a breastfeeding flash mob in central London during National Breastfeeding Awareness Week. As she explained in her blog post, 170 nursing mums turned up and fed their babies in public for 20 minutes to demonstrate that breastfeeding your baby is normal and to help boost the low breastfeeding rates in this country.

Well done them on taking a stand. Here are some images of the day. To all the breastfeeding mums who took part, we salute you - and obviously we secretly hope that you were wearing our
