Airport police say 43-year-old Adam Blumenkranz claimed he had the drug for medicinal purposes.

Crew members from Flight 510 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, say they became suspicious on Monday when Blumenkranz dropped a clear plastic bag in the cabin.

As the plane approached Newark Liberty International Airport, the crew reported the man entered the lavatory.

Port Authority police spokesman Al Della Fave said that is when a flight attendant knocked on the bathroom door.

When he emerged, attendants said there was a strong smell of marijuana.
According to NJ.com, Blumenkranz told police who met him at the gate in Terminal A that he was permitted to use marijuana for medical reasons, and produced a bag of marijuana and a glass pipe for smoking it, prompting his arrest.

Blumenkranz was charged with possession of less than 50 grams of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia and released.
Blumenkranz, who told police he is from Los Angeles, could not be reached for comment.

Two telephone listings for him were disconnected.

NJ.com reports the Willshire Boulevard address he gave authorities is an office where a company official said Blumenkranz used to receive his mail but no longer had any connection to the company.
